Many people ask me how I can be married to a French chef and not weigh a ton. I’ve actually lost 30 pounds since we met — with zero effort.
This is true. We eat as much as we like. We try to exercise but don’t get to the gym often (Too busy!). We often indulge in pastries, and we love good wine and craft beer. Still, we are both fit and happy with our bodies, and we achieve this easily.
People ask us all the time how we do it. It’s kind of a secret formula, if you will. And we want to share it with you.
We can’t reveal it all (not enough space!), but here are our 10 Habits For Staying Fit:
1. Enjoy food.
Food is a lot of fun. We have family dinners. We bring variety to the dinner table and try new ingredients or cuisines. More importantly, we never restrict ourselves; life is too short for that.
2. Stay active.
Nothing strenuous! Just parking your car away from the grocery store, taking a walk with the kids after dinner, or taking the stairs instead of the elevator goes a very long way.

3. Eat a lot of fiber.
Choose whole-grain ingredients. Add seeds and nuts to your salads. Leave the skin of vegetables on. Eat more beans and lentils, and of course those essential leafy green vegetables.
4. Avoid processed foods.
We shop around the aisles of our supermarket, where the “real food” is, and avoid the rest unless an ingredient is on our grocery list. Processed food is expensive, unhealthy, and not that convenient.
5. Don’t eat out.
Most restaurants use processed foods, and you can’t control what you put in your body. We eat at home 90% of the time. It’s convenient, fun, and we save a ton of money too.
6. Cook your food from scratch.
Don’t spend hours in the kitchen. There is plenty of quick recipes in my book, or in our Dirt Cheap, Ultra Fast Cookbook so grab that opportunity to make simple, healthy food in minutes.
7. Never skip a meal.
A bad lunch is worse than no lunch at all. And by the way, a yogurt is not lunch. Have a real meal: maybe a small salad to start, then a main course with plenty of vegetables, then a yogurt or a piece of cheese, and finish with an apple, for instance.
8. We only drink water (And wine. And craft beer.).
Give up soda. Really. Life is better without it. Trust us.
9. Don’t spend much time in the kitchen.
Come on, we know you’re busy. And sometimes we don’t feel like spending hours in the kitchen. Rely on my chef tips to make your life real simple and organized. So you have time for what you really love to do.

We don’t count calories. We don’t worry about how much we eat. We don’t even worry about our weight. We stick to our simple rules so we get more freedom.
