Having lived here for 22 years, I have witnessed one snatch theft so far. That was two years ago when I was walking alongside my mother at a neighbourhood wet market.
I don’t feel that Kuala Lumpur is particularly dangerous because I have fortunately never encountered petty crime personally. However, I do find myself on high alert when waking on streets alone (especially in the downtown areas) or when I am walking to my car in isolated parking lots.
Over the years of social conditioning (‘don’t walk alone! / ‘always travel with male company’ / ‘lock your car the moment you get in’) it is easy to be afraid of nothing and everything. But I’d say Kuala Lumpur is no different than other major cities in SEA that are deemed ‘dangerous’.
i would agree with most people who answered here, Kuala Lumpur is not more dangerous than any cities in the world particularly in south east asian.
having spend half of my life here, my mom actually scare for my safety when I wanted to on Euro trip (london paris).
to compare, its not everyday we have a murder scene here. people most likely died because of car accident due to texting or instagraming.
we are not scare to go out because of terrorist threat thanks to our brave and intelligence police department.
just don’t walk alone if you don’t familiar with the area and put your handbag inside to prevent from snatcher.
