Najib loses appeal, headed to prison

PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has lost in his final attempt to overturn the 12-year jail sentence and RM210 million fine for misappropriation of SRC International funds. Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat ruled the former prime minister had failed to show how the findings of the lower courts were perverse and needed the intervention of the Apex Court. She said the decisions of the High Court and Court of Appeal were correct. Tengku Maimun said the sentences were also not manifestly excessive. "She then ordered the commital order to be issued. The ruling means Najib, 69, would be taken to prison to serve out his jail sentence. Present in court to hear the outcome were Najib's wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor and family members. Also present was Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. The other judges on the panel were the Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak Tan Sri Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, Datuk P Nallini, Datuk Mary Lim Thiam Suan and Datuk Mohamad Zabidin Mo...

Sarawak Report: Najib Won't Take The Stand

Think of that award winning Mary Ann Jolly interview and then remember her questions were superficial and polite compared to the ‘full proboscopy’ that the ex-PM can expect once AG Tommy Thomas has him pinned down in the witness box and snapped on his latex gloves. Why have there been so many changing stories from the PM in recent years?  How could he not notice he had acquired millions in his account? Why did he not report the money and rather spent it on family luxuries instead? Let us go through day by day and hour by hour the process by which this money arrived in Najib’s account, once he had ordered for a fund under his control to borrow it from a public pension fund for reasons yet to be properly explained. The former PM will have to answer each and every one of these questions fully. He can’t just flounce off like he did for the TV show, complaining the questions aren’t fair or the ones he had agreed to answer. Once he has sworn under oath to answer truthfully all re...

Jho Low Moves To Block Books On 1MDB - EXCLUSIVE

Lawyers acting for the fugitive financier Jho Low, who is believed to be hiding in China, are seeking to threaten UK publishers and distributors in an attempt to block two upcoming books on the 1MDB scandal. The books are The Sarawak Report by the editor of this site and Billion Dollar Whale written by journalists from the Wall Street Journal. Both are due to be published next month. Information made available to Sarawak Report indicates that the lawyers have advised Jho Low that British libel laws can be best exploited by threatening intermediaries with expensive legal engagement, rather than seeking to challenge the authors who are armed with copious information about the heist. Yesterday, the UK publisher of The Sarawak Report received a letter from the London law firm Schillings, which has emerged as the company hired by Low to represent him regarding alleged defamation issues.  The letter threatened the publisher with “substantial damages” on the basis that the law firm as...

WSJ: Rosmah in scope for 1MDB criminal charges as ‘central actor’

KUALA LUMPUR, June 26 — Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, 66, may face criminal charges alongside her husband, former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak who is suspected of embezzling funds from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). Citing a plethora of unnamed sources including local investigators into the 1MDB scandal, family members and associates of the couple who were once Malaysia’s most powerful, the US publication reported that Rosmah is seen as having played a central role in the alleged misappropriation from the sovereign investment fund. “People who know Ms Rosmah say she helped orchestrate the alleged involvement of a young Malaysian financier who the US Justice Department says helped set up the 1MDB fund and then oversaw its looting,” the WSJ wrote in an article published yesterday. It named the financier as Low Taek Jho, the 36-year-old Penang-born fugitive billionaire, better known as Jho Low, who is wanted by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) as one of the...
